About This Role

A leading national drayage and transload provider operating across 15+ U.S. port markets is seeking an Assistant to the Director of Operations to support the day-to-day execution of a high-volume, fast-paced drayage operation. This role is hybrid with the flexibility to work remotely, but the ideal candidate must be located in or around the northern New Jersey area and available to come on-site as needed. This is a true jack-of-all-trades position. You will serve as the right hand to the Director of Operations, helping manage everything from dispatch coordination to driver compliance, vendor communication, and operational reporting. No two days will look the same, and the ability to wear multiple hats is essential. RESPONSIBILITIES - Assist the Director of Operations with daily oversight of drayage and container transport operations - Coordinate with dispatch, drivers, terminals, and port authorities to ensure smooth execution of pickup and delivery schedules - Monitor and track container statuses, chassis availability, per diem charges, and demurrage costs - Communicate with steamship lines, terminals, and warehouses to resolve operational issues in real time - Help manage driver onboarding, compliance documentation (DOT, FMCSA, TWIC), and fleet records - Prepare operational reports, KPI dashboards, and performance summaries for leadership - Support vendor management including chassis pools, maintenance providers, and fuel suppliers - Assist with customer service escalations and ensure service commitments are met - Coordinate with billing and accounting on accessorial charges, rate confirmations, and invoice discrepancies - Help implement and optimize TMS workflows, API/EDI integrations, and operational SOPs - Step in to manage day-to-day operations when the Director is traveling or unavailable - Support expansion efforts as the company opens new markets and terminals QUALIFICATIONS - 2-5 years of experience in drayage, intermodal, or domestic freight operations (required) - Working knowledge of port operations, container movements, chassis logistics, and per diem/demurrage management - Experience with TMS platforms and operational software - Strong organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple priorities simultaneously - Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal - Problem solver who stays calm under pressure and can make decisions quickly - Comfortable working independently in a remote environment while staying closely connected to the team - Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and general business technology - Familiarity with DOT/FMCSA regulations and driver compliance documentation a plus - Located in or within commuting distance of northern New Jersey COMPENSATION - Base salary: $65,000 - $85,000 depending on experience - Annual bonus opportunity based on operational performance - Total compensation potential: $75,000 - $90,000+ - Full benefits: health, dental, vision, 401(k), PTO - Remote flexibility with occasional on-site requirements
